Why is my AC running but not cooling the house? The most common causes are restricted airflow (usually a clogged filter), a dirty outdoor condenser coil, low refrigerant from a leak, a frozen evaporator coil, or an outdoor unit that’s running its fan but not its compressor. Two of those you can check yourself in the next ten minutes. The rest need a technician – and running the system in the meantime can make some of them worse.

Why is my AC running but not cooling? If it’s running, it’s not broken — something is blocking the cold. Five things block it.
One. This filter. Hold yours up to a light. If you can’t see light through it, that’s your problem. Five bucks, five minutes, done.
Two. Your outdoor coil. If it’s caked in cottonwood and grass clippings, your home’s heat has nowhere to go. Kill the power at the disconnect, then rinse it gently with a garden hose.
Three. Low refrigerant. Refrigerant doesn’t get used up. If it’s low, it leaked — and that one’s our job, not yours.
Four. Ice on the lines. A frozen AC can’t cool. Shut it off, let it thaw. Ice is the symptom, not the disease.
Five. The outdoor fan spins, but the compressor won’t start. That’s usually a capacitor — one of the cheapest fixes we do.
So check the filter and the coil yourself first. If that fixes it, you don’t need us — and I just saved you a service call.

What’s actually happening
Your AC doesn’t create cold air; it moves heat from inside your house to outside. Anything that interrupts that transfer – airflow across the indoor coil, refrigerant carrying the heat, or the outdoor unit rejecting it – leaves the system running full tilt while the house barely cools. That’s why “it’s running but nothing’s happening” is usually a transfer problem, not a thermostat problem.
The five most common causes

1. A clogged air filter. The number one thing our technicians find on “not cooling” calls, especially in late summer after the system has run hard for months. A choked filter starves the indoor coil of airflow, so there’s barely any air to cool – and if it goes on long enough, the coil freezes (see #4).

2. A dirty condenser coil. The outdoor unit dumps your home’s heat into the outside air through its coil. Cottonwood fluff, grass clippings, and dust cake onto it over a Missouri summer and insulate it. The system runs, but the heat has nowhere to go.
3. Low refrigerant. Refrigerant doesn’t get “used up” – if it’s low, it leaked. A low system cools weakly, runs constantly, and often ices up. This one is strictly technician territory: finding and fixing the leak matters more than topping it off, and refrigerant handling requires EPA certification.

4. A frozen evaporator coil. Ironically, a frozen AC can’t cool. Ice on the indoor coil or the copper lines blocks airflow entirely. It’s a symptom – usually of #1 or #3 – not the root problem.
5. Outdoor fan runs, compressor doesn’t. If the outdoor unit hums and the fan spins but the air coming off it isn’t hot, the compressor may not be running – often a failed capacitor, one of the most common (and most affordable) AC repairs there is.
What you can safely check yourself
Check the filter first – if you can’t see light through it, replace it. Then walk outside: is the condenser coil visibly caked with debris? You can gently rinse it from the outside with a garden hose, power off at the disconnect first. Check that the thermostat is on COOL (not fan-only) and set below room temperature. Look at the copper lines at the indoor unit and outside – any ice? If so, switch the system to OFF with the fan ON and let it thaw for a few hours before doing anything else. Finally, make sure supply vents are open and nothing is blocking the return.
When to call a technician
Call if the filter and coil are clean and it still won’t cool; if you see ice more than once; if the outdoor unit hums but won’t fully start; if the air from the vents isn’t noticeably cooler than the room; or if the breaker trips repeatedly. And don’t keep running a system that’s icing or short-cycling “to get through the week” – that’s how a $250 capacitor call becomes a compressor.

Missouri note
Late-summer humidity makes this failure sneakier here: a struggling AC often keeps the temperature close but loses the humidity battle first, so the house feels sticky and warm even when the thermostat reads 76. If your home feels muggier than the number on the wall suggests, that’s often the earliest sign of a transfer problem.
